How Retailers Can Improve Deepfake Fraud Prevention

Retailers have long faced fraud in many forms, from stolen credit cards to friendly fraud chargebacks. But a new breed of threat is emerging: AI-powered fraudsters. Criminals are harnessing the same machine learning and generative AI tools that businesses use to innovate, creating synthetic identities, manipulating documents, and even deploying deepfakes to bypass authentication systems. Deepfake fraud prevention is therefore becoming a critical priority for senior fraud and risk professionals, helping retailers combat synthetic identities and AI-enabled retail fraud before significant losses occur.

How Deepfakes and Synthetic Identities Increase Fraud Risk

The Rise of Synthetic Identities

Unlike traditional identity theft, synthetic identities combine fragments of real and fabricated data to create a convincing but non-existent customer profile. AI makes this easier by generating realistic names, addresses, and even credit histories that pass basic KYC (Know Your Customer) checks. Fraudsters then use these identities to open accounts, apply for credit, or exploit loyalty programmes, often remaining undetected until significant losses occur.

As synthetic identity fraud becomes more sophisticated, retailers need stronger onboarding controls that combine identity verification with behavioural analysis and ongoing account monitoring, rather than relying solely on static customer data.

Deepfakes and Document Manipulation

Generative AI is also enabling hyper-realistic deepfakes—fake images, videos, or voices—that can be used to trick biometric verification or customer service agents. Retailers using video-based KYC, voice authentication, or scanned ID checks are increasingly at risk of manipulation.

For example, a fraudster could use an AI-generated voice clone to reset an account password via a contact centre, or submit a convincingly altered passport or driving licence to create a fraudulent customer profile. As these technologies improve, retailers need increasingly sophisticated methods of verifying both identity and authenticity.

Countering AI with AI

The most effective defence is to fight AI with AI. Modern fraud prevention platforms use machine learning, behavioural analytics, and real-time risk scoring to detect anomalies that synthetic identities or deepfakes cannot easily replicate, such as unusual device fingerprints, inconsistent geolocation data, abnormal purchasing behaviour, or impossible customer journeys.

Rather than relying on a single authentication check, AI continuously evaluates activity throughout the customer session, allowing retailers to identify suspicious behaviour before fraud is completed.

Building Multiple Detection Layers

Retailers are increasingly adopting multi-layered authentication strategies that extend beyond traditional passwords or document verification. Adaptive security systems analyse real-time behaviour—including mouse movements, typing cadence, session switching, device intelligence, and transaction history—to build a more complete picture of user legitimacy.

Combining behavioural analytics with device fingerprinting, biometric verification, and risk-based authentication creates multiple barriers that are significantly harder for AI-driven fraudsters to overcome.

Human Oversight Still Matters

While automation is essential, fraud teams continue to play a critical role. Training frontline staff to recognise the warning signs of synthetic identities, manipulated documents, and AI-generated media remains an important part of an effective fraud prevention strategy.

Clear escalation procedures, regular fraud awareness training, and close collaboration between fraud, customer service, and security teams help ensure suspicious activity is investigated quickly and consistently.

Staying Ahead of AI-Enabled Fraud

As AI-powered fraud continues to evolve, retailers are strengthening onboarding controls, investing in advanced fraud detection platforms, and sharing intelligence across the wider payments ecosystem. Regulators and payment providers are also placing greater emphasis on protecting businesses against emerging AI-enabled threats.

By combining deepfake fraud prevention with behavioural analytics, synthetic identity detection, adaptive authentication, and skilled human oversight, retailers can stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated attacks while protecting revenue, customer trust, and the overall shopping experience.
